Two Things You Must Discuss With a Contractor Before Using Their Concrete Polishing Service

Blog

Here are two important matters to discuss with a contractor before you use their concrete polishing service.

The level of shine you want the concrete floor to have

The first thing you should discuss with the concrete contractor is the level of shine you'd like the floor to have. You'll need to talk about this, as it will help them to determine how long they'll need to polish the floor for (as generally speaking, the glossier you want the floor to be, the more time they'll have to spend polishing it). This will not only help them to work out how long they'll need to devote to this job but will also enable them to calculate how much the polishing will cost (if the contractor bases their fees on the time their work takes).

When considering this matter, you should think about the pros and cons of each level of shininess. For example, polishing a floor to the point where it develops a high-gloss finish is a great way to modernise and add some chicness to an otherwise plain-looking space. It's also a great choice if you or anyone else who spends time in this area is a wheelchair user, as the wheels will glide very easily over this smooth, low-friction surface.

However, if you need the floor to have some friction because you're worried about slipping when you walk on it, then you might want to have the contractor create a satin finish with their concrete polisher; this will give the floor an attractive gleam but will still ensure there is some friction when you walk on it.

The concrete floor's current condition

You'll also need to talk about the floor's current condition. If for example, you're having your garage's concrete floor polished, and this floor has some potholes in it as a result of the many times you've driven and parked your car on it, then you'll need to let the contractor know about these and have them repair these holes a week or so before they polish the floor (so that the concrete they use to fill the potholes has time to dry).

Ensuring that the floor is pothole-free will mean the contractor will be able to move their polishing machine across it, without worrying about passing it over, and then potentially widening any existing potholes. It will also mean that when they're finished polishing this surface, its newly-polished look won't be spoiled by the presence of several potholes.
