What Determines the Strength of a Concrete Slab?

A concrete slab looks and feels strong to the average person, but a lot can affect how strong the final poured product really is. While pouring concrete can be a do-it-yourself job for more simple projects like a small patio on level ground, it's really best left to construction contractors for projects that are more intense and that require more concrete strength. A number of issues come into play when choosing the type of concrete to pour.

The Concrete Grade

Like stainless steel, concrete comes in different varieties known as grades. These grades are mixes of various materials that result in concrete that is better for specific purposes. One might be suitable only for basic patio slabs, but another might be strong enough to be used as a foundation piling. It's important for you to know exactly what that concrete slab will be used for because you don't want to use, for example, basic-patio concrete for a verandah that contains outdoor kitchen equipment and other very heavy items that would require a stronger grade of concrete.

The Underlying Surface

A concrete slab is placed horizontally, so chances are the underlying surface will be in contact with the ground. But most slabs have to have a base between them and the actual soil, and the quality of the base also determines how strong the final concrete slab is in its environment. Think about the difference in strength between a properly installed concrete driveway and a simple stepping stone in the garden; the stepping stone can easily tilt or crack, while the driveway needs more force to crack or chip.

The Thickness of the Finished Slab

The thickness of the finished slab also affects the strength. A thicker slab will be stronger than a thinner one, regardless of grade. It can pay to have the thickest-possible slab (within reason, of course) installed when creating a patio, driveway, or another concrete-covered area. The thickness offers not only added material to make the slab stronger, but the thickness prevents some damage from getting all the way through the slab. For example, while it's still possible for frost to crack a thick concrete slab, it will be harder for it to do so, even though it could still shift the slab as a whole.

When you meet with the concrete contractors who will create the slabs, you can discuss what you plan to have those slabs hold and what grade and thickness would be best. Proper installation now means a longer life span for the concrete, and fewer repairs for you to have to worry about.
